The Essential Appliance...

Buying a kitchen appliance? My advice is to get it from Williams-Sonoma. Our coffee pot is nearly as essential to us as our refrigerator. About 5 years ago (or so), Brian and I received a coffee pot from Williams-Sonoma as a gift. We're pretty substantial coffee drinkers so the pot gets used daily and often multiple times per day. A couple of years after getting the coffee pot, it started having some problems, and sadly (because it would cost so much to replace it), we had to retire it. Then a few months later I was shopping in a WS store, and I mentioned my broken coffee pot to the sales woman. She said to bring it back to the store, and she would see what they could do. I did, and they took my broken pot and gave me a brand new one. We've used that coffee pot for the past couple of years until this week when it started to leak, deciding it was time to retire. Back to Williams-Sonoma I went this afternoon, and about 10 minutes later (with both kids in tow), I left the store with another brand new coffee pot.

As it turns out, Williams-Sonoma guarantees any appliance they sell for the life of the product. If you have any problems with it, just bring it back --- receipt or not --- and they will replace it with a same or similar product. Not a bad deal, huh?? I'm buying just about everything for my kitchen from WS now!! I'm on my third coffee pot, and I've yet to actually purchase one!

Memorial Day...

Memorial Day weekend continued for us today with the annual Worthington Memorial Day Parade. Dylan, our little patriot, enjoyed the parade very much, and Brooklyn slept through most of it... even the wailing police cars and firetrucks.

This has been our first really warm weekend this year...temps were probaby near the 90s. We grilled (teriyaki chicken, BDP's favorite) and enjoyed the deck for the first time since we finished it a couple of weeks ago.

I've posted an album of pictures from Day Out With Thomas, the NFL Hall of Fame, and the parade to indulge Mom & Dad and Karen & Lisa. I have to warn you --- there are a lot of pictures --- many of which might bore you to tears --- unless you just really like antique cars, corvettes, or clowns --- that's the real danger of digital photography! To access the album, you'll have to set up a WinkFlash account and use the password "Memorial" for this particular album. Click here to access my WinkFlash album --->

Discovering Ohio...

It's really hard to believe that we've been up here for almost two years. We've taken a few trips around the state, but this weekend we finally ventured northeast of Columbus into the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Our trip was mainly for Dylan... each Memorial Day weekend, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway hosts a visit by Thomas the Tank Engine, and for Dylan, there couldn't be anything more exciting than a ride on a real train (especially Thomas). Since Canton is so close, we decided to pair the train ride with a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. We had a wonderful, but very quick, trip.

This picture was taken from our hotel in Cuyahoga Falls. The Cuyahoga River runs just below the hotel, and it was quite a view from the suite.

This is another view of the Cuyahoga River from the hotel.

Dylan waited for his train ride very eagerly and, for the most part, very patiently... he made sure he brought his own Thomas the Tank Engine blanket and pillow to sleep with at the hotel, and after enjoying dinner at Swenson's, a local drive-in diner, and a late night swim in the hotel pool (well, late night for him at least!), he nestled down with dreams of riding the rails the next day with Thomas!

Now, this is a bonus picture of Brooklyn. I couldn't resist including it because she had such a cute expression on her face. This was her first official road trip, and she proved herself to be a great traveler. Despite the heat and not-so-ideal conditions for a tiny one, she hung in there with us and complained very little.

The first stop on the trip was the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The exhibits are very well done, and I have to say that I learned a great deal about the history of the sport... like Columbus once had a team and there once was a team called the Brooklyn Dodgers. I also saw Refrigerator Perry's Super Bowl ring, and I'm pretty sure it could have fit on Brooklyn's arm --- it was a size 23 (or something really big like that)!

Now, Day Out With Thomas was the real highlight of the trip. We went to the Boston Mills station of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway along with what seemed like thousands of other toddlers and their families, and Dylan and Brian boarded the train. They rode the train for about half an hour before returning to the station.

Dylan is on board the train in this photo... holding out his ticket!

Following the train ride, Dylan posed for a picture with the train's engineer and brakeman.

He also visited with Sir Topham Hatt, Chairman of the Railway on Sodor Island. All week he talked about giving Sir Topham Hatt a high five, and when his turn came, he did just that!

On our way back home we drove through some of Ohio's Amish Country, and we saw some interesting sights like... a group of Amish ordering from a drive-in diner on foot... and an Amish woman with her horse and buggy parked at a gas station! We also stopped at Lehman's, a hardware store (of sorts) that carries all kinds of household goods designed for the "simple life." They have lots of old-fashioned and non-electric appliances and a kitchen and houseware section that made me want to linger all day. It's definitely a place I'm going back too... as is this entire region of Ohio! I think this trip is only first of many that we'll take in this area!

And a great big THANK YOU to our neighbors, Joe & Judi, who took care of Riley while we were gone. They have been two of God's greatest blessings to us since moving to Ohio!!

The Latest Pictures...

Okay, Mom... here are the pictures you requested. Of course, there should be many more after this weekend's trip to ride "Thomas the Tank Engine". Will post later... For now, I hope you enjoy these!

All Hands On Deck...

When you buy an older house --- in our case, a 64 year old house --- you are bound to have a few eye sores that linger from the previous owner(s). For us, it was the deck in our backyard (we have a few others too, but they are not the subject of this post). The deck was hideous... 30 years old... built by a not-so-meticulous do-it-yourselfer... never been treated...moldy... slippery... and killer slick in the winter snow! It was so ugly that we hated to even go out in the backyard.

Not anymore!!

The week after Brooklyn was born Mom and Brian decided to clean the deck with a little bleach. This effort yielded very little results, so they decided to power wash it hoping that the entire thing would not disintegrate upon contact. Much to our surprise, the deck held up and looked much better. Their project did not stop there though... a few coats of new stain, some lattice to cover the bottom of the deck, a few new container plants, a new fire pit, and a new set of patio furniture finished it off, and I am so proud of everything they did! The deck looks fabulous --- welcoming and comfortable! Now, all we need is some warmer weather so we can enjoy a nice "al fresco" dinner!

Check out these before and after photos...

Brooklyn & Bossier, 1 month...

So I'm a little late posting these pictures, but I did want to get a few shots of Brooklyn on her one month birthday on the site. As we did with Dylan, we'll take a picture of Brooklyn each month on her birthday with Bossier, the bear, to show how much she has grown. It's so fun to look back on these pictures and see how much they've changed... when we started them with Dylan, he was hardly bigger than Bossier. You can see that Brooklyn is already gaining on the bear rather quickly.

Brooklyn is doing fantastic! She is a very content baby --- at least most of the time --- and she is finding her special place in our little family very quickly. She even tolerated the very busy lifestyle we had over the past month rather well. She sleeps pretty good at night, eats very well, and has a fair amount of alert time where she shows off her very blue eyes. I don't know if these blue eyes are permanent, but they do elicit comments from strangers like "Are you really this baby's mother?" She loves to be outside and hates sleeping on her back... so much for what the pediatrician recommends, huh?? She is a tremendous blessing to us...

Thank you, Mom & Dad...

There has never been a day in my life when I have not been completely grateful for the parents God gave me... they are truly amazing!! The past month has been no exception, so I thought I'd post a blog and give them both a shout out for the wonderful help and encouragement they've been to us lately.

My mom is no average mom --- in fact --- she is no average person. Most people in this world sit around thinking about how they'd like to do something, but that's as far as they get. Not my mom... she thinks about it and then jumps up and does it. As soon as Brooklyn was born, she jumped on what must have been the first flight out of Baton Rouge and made her way up to Ohio to help out. The interesting part was that she had a one-way ticket, and when we got news that Dad's car repairs would delay his trip to Ohio to pick her up, she went ahead and spent a month with us... that's a month away from work, her Red Hat Society, her pickleball and bowling games, and all other aspects of her life. I know that it was an enormous sacrifice for her, but I am so grateful for the help she gave --- driving me around town, cleaning my house, cooking meals, watching after Dylan, refinishing our deck, running after Easter eggs, baking cookies to take to the local firehouse, hosting an "al fresco" party on the newly refinished deck for my neighbors, watching the Easton model train for hours with Dylan, riding the trolley around the shopping center over and over again with Dylan, getting Brooklyn to sleep when no one else could... the list could go on and on. THANKS MOM FOR BEING SO MUCH MORE THAN AVERAGE!!

Now, there is nothing ordinary about Daddy either! He finally made it to Ohio with his newly repaired car, and we had a great visit. He knows my town better than I do because he and Dylan took very lengthy wagon rides nearly every day... they covered some serious territory in Worthington! He brought so much fun into the house for all of us, especially Dylan --- he taught Dylan all about car engines (Dylan can now name and identify more parts on a car than most men), model trains (We spent hours watching the Easton LGB model train and the HO model in the Janis Senior Center basement all because Dylan has an extreme fascination with anything train-related), front loaders (Thanks for the really noisy toy, Daddy!), and the best way to make chocolate milk. He treated me to a bowl of the best potato soup in German Village and was very patient and supportive while I found a private spot at Schiller Park to nurse Brooklyn. He even brought some of his handyman skills... when the motor coupler on my washing machine called it quits, he and Brian rolled up their sleeves and fixed it. He also contributed to the deck refinishing project and helped us enjoy the firepit on a really cool night despite the fact that he hates cold weather! Did I mention that he made the 17-hour drive from Baton Rouge by himself in a single day? THANK YOU DADDY FOR BEING EXTRAORDINARY!
